Anti Police Protesters Help Usher In The Police State

I am going to start this off by stating that we recognize the severe problems in the current police systems. I think anyone who follows our works knows this very well. We also fully support peoples ability to protest (can also be seen in our work).

We have been doing our best to work with the families of police homicide victims, get cameras onto officers and off of the streets (Hamilton police are still refusing lapel cameras and have plans to put CCTV cameras on every street corner in the city), and all around just trying to curb the evolving police state.

All of our work over the past 3 years was basically just nullified in one night! As the Hamilton police have been trying to justify spending $44,000 on just one mobile CCTV camera (with plans to buy more) to aid the police in protests and riots, as they try to justify hiring more officers, and spending more and more money. A small group of protesters basically gave the police everything they need to sell all of it to the public.

Yesterday was the international day against police brutality. Here in Hamilton a rally was planned and promoted for 7pm. The posters advertising the protest summed up what the event would entail.

When we arrived at the starting point of the rally (McNab bus station), it was the exactly what I expected to see. A small group of people wearing all black, beating on drums and letting out a chorus of robotic chants.

“who’s streets out streets”, “no justice no peace F the police”, “get those animals off those horses”

Warrand, who has been present at every police board meeting in nearly the last year, and has completely dedicated himself to the issue. Held up his banner and began to yell, encouraging the protesters to support the victims of police brutality and asking them to attend the police board meetings. Protesters quickly walked over and raised their banner in front of his and began chanting at a high pitch to drown what Warrand was saying out.

Seeing this I knew how this protest was going to go. So I decided that I did not want to be associated with this group and stayed on the outside of protest.

As I walked away from the location Warrand was standing, a few Asian students walked up and started to snap pictures. An older man wearing all black and a green tie came out of the crowd and began snapping at them. “get out of here! You kind is not welcome, you come here and think that you can do what you want” Where his remarks.

It is unlikely that the whole group felt this way, and the man was clearly intoxicated. But it still surprised me and when I asked him what he thought he was doing? He looked at me grinned and walked back into the crowd.

Frank and Lucas split off and went into the crowd to try to interview some of the attendees. After the crowd made their way to the corner of King street and James street and made their way down James street north. I could not find them.

When the protest got past James street and York street, people began coming out of the restaurants they where in. Some of the comments I heard while walking by them where “What the hell?” “Are you kidding me?”. They where obviously not impressed.

This aspect of the rally was really interesting to me. Teenagers who came across the protest loved it! Joining and yelling F the police, etc. Intoxicated people from a few bars seemed to enjoy it, but families out for dinner, etc. Where not impressed at all.

Shortly after this I found Frank and Lucas. They informed me that pure craziness happened as they attempted to interview people.

Frank had been walking through the crowd asking questions. What do you propose for solutions? Why are you wearing masks?, etc.

The leader of the group then came to Frank and accused him of trying to unmask people and that he was working with the police ( at a police brutality rally I attended in Toronto a couple of years ago, I was branded a cop with a camera, paranoid just a little?). He brought up that he knew who Frank was (of course he did, this was the same person who pushed Lucas into a police horse at a previous protest), and that yours truly had been over heard saying “That tall guy is a communist”. Which yes I did state that, what else do you call a person who goes to protests and public event waving an over sized Chinese flag while wearing a red hat that has the Soviet Union symbol on it? In fact the organizers label themselves as Anarcho communists.

This highlights another very interesting point that we noticed. They had people following us and others around, listening in on our conversations.

People in the protest started to set of fireworks along James street north. They did this as they turned onto Barton Street and headed towards the jail. Eventually the protest made it to the central police station.

Protesters continued to set off fireworks in front of the police station, while lighting one it went off and hit a window on the police station. Then people began yelling at the police. One man even began threatening them. Saying people are going to start being violent to police. Shortly after it was announced that the protest was over.

As 3 people split of from the group, police immediately went after them and cornered one of them in front of an apartment building for disabled people. The remaining protesters all ran over to “help” the guy. But after they found out that he was just being given a ticket. They did not stay to make sure that is what was happening. Other than a few, they did not have cameras on what was happening and surprisingly just left with the guy still in police custody.

After witnessing all of this, I can say that the only thing that was achieved last night. Was a selling point for the police and their future plans! This childish temper tantrum of a protest, that gave zero options for solutions. Just set back the work of real activists/media and people in this city in a huge way! It will take years to undo the work that these protesters just did for the police.

  1. The trudeau government has been funding this sort of thing since the 70′s because they are god damn commies. Unfortunately the conservatives are the only ones worth voting for unless you want to lick boots. This sort of thing this protest only makes people look stupid. If you were wise you would enter politics yourselves and make change.

So watching what the police are up to and keeping a camera on them to make sure that they do not do anything to protesters is “cop-nobbing”? I also clearly stated in the article that I decided to stay outside of the march because I had no interest in being part of it.

I am sure you didn’t see me being the first person running over to where the cops had one of your fellow protesters cornered in front of the building for disabled people right? (to make sure there was a camera on what was happening) Yeah I must have been to busy chatting it up with cops….

I’m lying about? My exact statement was “who use a military grade bull horn that was purchased at The Source? (by a student that was at a rally for students)

  3. good reportage fellas!
i think that history has shown that what you guys are saying is true - if we don’t fight back against authority, if we instead update our shitty websites with nonsense about how everyone who isn’t in our self-righteous conspiracy circle-jerk is employed by the united nations under agenda 21 - then the police have to give up all their guns and crowd control devices cuz they’d look so silly when no demos are happening!
    power to the people!

    Hi Terry,

I don’t think you’re collaborating with Police. I just think you’re “cop-nobbing” with them. Like hobnobbing. Only.. with cops. You were standing with them. Walking with them. Talking with them. While pointing cameras at the protestors. From where I was standing/walking.. you were part of their procession. I consider that cop-nobbing (a term I coined at 11am this morning).

And yes.. you are most definitely serving the elite. What else would you call it when you situate the protest as something that upset or put-off affluent diners? Why focus on their feelings? Why check in with the Saturday night dining crowd’s take on the protest? If not.. to situate this act of resistance as ‘abnormal’ or unwanted by ‘adult, money-spending-dinner-eating-outers’?

And why else would you disparage the march as undoing peoples hard work? Funny choice of words. Your comments regarding the tactics of the march are almost verbatim for the ‘change-from-within’ pundits during the Civil Rights & Labour Rights movements. Those (so-called) activists that support using ‘Government channels’.. proper processes… attending meetings.. ‘working from within’ the power structure to make change. Those voices (much like your voice in this article) tried to paint radicals from the Civil, Labour and Womens rights movements as “undoing the hard work” of legislators, and moderates. Their words are same as your words. From the wrong side of history. The idea of.. don’t push too hard or they’ll send more cops! Don’t’ protest with anger or they’ll get more money! If they beat you, its your own fault, you shouldn’t be on the streets! That march is unlawful! If protestors stopped protesting, the cops would leave us alone! etc.

Lucky for us.. true radicals… and real activists.. ignored these cries and WON US EVERY SINGLE CIVIL RIGHT WE NOW ENJOY… by taking the streets.. ignoring the cries of elite-serving moderates… and taking the power back from the elite.

We don’t want a seat at their table Terry. We want them gone. Your “change from within”,.. voting.. dining out and sneering at radicals position is never going to win ANY substantive concessions or change. History proves this. Change comes 100% from People power.. working from outside the apparatus is the ONLY way forward. Always has been.

You… like the moderates of 1963.. 1913.. or 1863.. are arguing the case for polite, nice, status quo serving ‘protest’. Holding hands and singing Kumbaya kinda stuff. And whether you see it or not.. that position is ALWAYS serving the interests of the elite.

As for the Casseroles fiasco.. the student you refer to is Lucas. And he wasn’t there to talk about Student issues, and you KNOW this!!! Here you are lying again!!! The dude had a bullhorn, with a battery pack. that was louder than anything there. ANd he used that pulpit to talk about AGENDA 21 for over an hour. Not one word about Students or student issues. At a march in solidarity with the QC student protests!?!?!? You somehow turned one of the most beautiful sustained acts of civil disobedience in North American history, into some hack film shoot about some kinda depopulation program and how anarchists & communists don’t want to hear it. Congrats.! WHAT THE FUCK ELSE DID YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN?! It was a march about Students & Free tuition, in solidarity with DECLASSE. Not the Alex Jones regurgitant walk.!!! You wanna parade around and be loud about Agenda 21.. form your own fucking walk.

And no.. people don’t want YOU filming them. I certainly don’t. Why would I want to be recorded by someone that is there for the sole purpose of lying and misrepresenting my position,.. all the while walking around with and in step with cops!?!?

And yes.. you are conspiracy theorist Terry. You write about forces that are conspiring against us. That are not proven. They are just theories. It’s an ipso facto thang dude.

And yes.. you most certainly have ZERO journalistic integrity, values, etc. Again.. refer to ANY “Code of Ethics” for Journalists. I gave you the name of the biggest org. But there are plenty. And your work wouldn’t hold up as ‘ethical’ by ANY standard ANYWHERE.

    See you next time!

    @lee
Ok so just want to make sure I have this correctly. We are collaborating with police, serving the elite, have no journalistic values, conspiracy theorists, who use a military grade bull horn that was purchased at The Source? (by a student that was at a rally for students). does that sum it up or did I miss any?

And please correct me if I am wrong here But. To my understanding you describe yourself as an Anarchist, and you are preaching about how others should go by the current “book”?

They are not my reporters btw. We are all individuals doing our own thing, just like you have explained the rally to be, no Hierarchy here. And we record everything in public spaces. Do not go into a public space if you do not want to be recorded. I saw at least 100 people taking photo’s and video’s. Are they also trying to unmask everyone and put them in harms way? Is everyone out to get you guys?

As for the young man you mentioned, I have reviewed Franks footage of that interaction. Frank clearly says hey we have had our disagreements in the past but lets move on and work together. He was given an answer with some of that politeness you mentioned.

Zero names have been mentioned, no footage/pictures of the people at the rally has been released that could be seen as trying to put anyone into danger in this article.

Oh and this article was written as an opinion piece, of my personal experience at the rally.

Thanks, once again, to the Canadian Awareness Network for their divisive, elitist-agenda-serving, cop-nobbing bullshit masquerading as ‘journalism’

Here’s something your team might want to become “Aware” of.. a little document called the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics.. it’s a short, easy to read primer on what makes someone an actual journalist. Your ‘news organization’ is constantly in violation of the bulk of this document: Lying. Distorting truth. Presenting conjecture as fact. Oversimplifying. Misrepresenting. Gathering info through surreptitious methods. Narrowing the diversity of the experience and opinions. Presenting the piece through the lens of your own cultural values. Stereotyping based on age and politicization. Being sensitive to your subjects. Showing good taste. Avoiding pandering. Filming people without their permission, when it could bring them harm or legal/financial problems. MAKING YOURSELF PART OF THE STORY (that’s your favourite).

Your integrity as journalists is non-existent. As best evidenced by your seeming inability to detach yourself from your subject matter.

The protest had no leader (it’s kind of a hallmark of Anarchist functions, if you’d bothered do even 5 seconds of research). So.. which ONE person have you incorrectly singled out.. and why are you referring to that person as “the leader”? Could that be the young man I saw.. with 2 recorders pushed in his face for 15-2min.. repeatedly and politely telling your C.A.N team to back off?

The protest was (very widely) promoted as “Anti-Police”.. full stop.. calling for a state without Police and a march to confront their power. Confrontational was the word used. So why do you act indignant and surprised when you arrive to find a group of people doing exactly that? Did you expect find a moderate group of people calling for camera lapels and hand-holding with the Police board?

Your ‘reporters’ weren’t approached by anyone. Your ‘reporters’ were the approachers.. pushy, and unaccommodating.. they were recording people without their consent. And forcing cameras and recorders in people’s faces, after you were continually asked not to.

By framing yourselves as central to the story.. you have no journalistic integrity. You are players IN THE story. You are not reporting ON THE story.

Lying, misrepresenting events, distorting events, and putting yourself and your view points ahead of FACTS. Is it any wonder why people don’t consider your work ‘professional’

I’m sure we’ll see you at the next march! We’ll be the ones working toward substantive change. You’ll be the dudes pushing cameras and recorders into unwilling peoples’ faces.. and bumping your military grade megaphones, blathering something something Agenda 21.. something.. fluoride.. something something chemtrails. TRUTH !!! TRUTH !!!

    @Christine
Please point me to one single article or video that we have made that that frames them as “bad guys”

  8. Christine // March 17, 2014 at 1:27 pm //

Lol, why would you guys expect people to do interviews with you, when they know full well that you consistently frame them as the bad guys?

“They had people following us and others around, listening in on our conversations.” - Well, isn’t that exactly what you were doing to them? If you don’t want them doing it to you, maybe stop doing it to them!

“A small group of protesters basically gave the police everything they need to sell all of it to the public.” - The police will try to sell it to the public one way or another, using staged events if need be. And from your description, nothing particularly alarming even happened at this protest. People exchanging words with one another and a firecracker hitting a building - these things happen every day! And they’re hardly an excuse for installing surveillance cameras everywhere! And what does any of this have to do with police getting lapel cameras?

I personally think it is awesome that an opportunity was opened up for people to express their anger and frustrations. Not everyone gets their anger, but so what? There are plenty of people who don’t get your position on many topics but should that stop you from expressing yourself?

As someone on Facebook commented: “…one thing protests do is remind our neighbours that people have a shared frustration, and the will to do something about it is there.” Amen to that.

  9. i feel like this was still successful. the people who were drunk and yelling, were mostly homeless youth, who battle police violence everyday. they were given a chance to vent their frustrations while being backed up by a huge crowd. even though they may lack an acedemic/educated analysis, that shouldnt really matter anyway. they were empowered that night to say thongs they would usually get assaulted for without witness.
protests and marches alone will not chamge sytemic problems such as policing. and of course its good to be critical of past events, but you make it sound like it was a total waste of time. this wasnt organized to appeal to the families and upper working class. it was more to give a space for folks who are marginalized by police everyday. what does youre ideal protest look like? emotional indifference and 5 star dinner parties?

  10. I also passed on attending. It seemed to me that many of the people planning on going were filled with rage and were ready to move to violence. I’d actually mentioned on FB that this type of event was susceptible to police infiltration and that acting violently was playing into their hands. It fell on deaf ears.

  11. Joanne MacIsaac // March 16, 2014 at 10:19 pm //

I am disappointed that this opportunity ended up this way. While, i am sure i speak for all victims and victims families, we appreciate the support - it has to be deliberate and thought out. We still wait for word from the SIU about Michael’s death (shot by a police officer on dec. 2nd) we are desperate for change so this does not happen to anyone else. lets not give the police ammunition to gain public support.

  12. Karyn Greenwood Graham // March 16, 2014 at 9:32 pm //

And that Terry is why I have not attended the annual protests anywhere on March 15th. It attracts radicals and haters of which I am not, even though a police officer killed my son. I do not want to change and will not change anything with hate. With reason, facts, love and understanding we will accomplish much more in the end. Affected Families of Police Homicide
