Windsor Police Now Equipped With Military Grade Armoured Vehicle

Cougar armoured vehicle in New Glasgow N.S.

The Windsor Police Service is currently refitting a Cougar variant of the Canadian military’s AVGP (Armoured Vehicle General Purpose) for law enforcement use.

The six-wheeled, 10-ton armoured fighting vehicle was donated to the city by the Department of National Defence last year.

It’s valued at $300,158.

Windsor police wouldn’t comment on the acquisition, except to say that it should be ready for unveiling and operation this spring.

The Canadian Army retired its entire fleet of AVGPs in 2005, replacing them with the bigger, more modern LAV III.

The AVGP dates back to the late 1970s. At one point, Canada had more than 490 in use — including 195 big-gunned Cougar varianta.

Since phasing out the fleet, the military has been donating the surplus vehicles to law enforcement agencies across the country.

The Edmonton Police Service received a Grizzly variant in 2007. RCMP in British Columbia received two Cougar variants in 2010.

Police organizations typically modify AVGPs for emergency response purposes by removing the turret and all armaments — a configuration known as the Tactical Armoured Vehicle (TAV) variant.

  1. Actually its not armored at all. The sides are angled to deflect bullets(protect occupants) and to provide water proofing (boat shaped hull) for floating. Good for helping people during floods and driving thru heavy snow during whiteout conditions, it has no offensive capabilities, its been stripped of all turret based mounts. Good for aid to civil power during natural disaster etc (ice storm, Calgary floods) It actual cost is probably closer to $80,000.00. We use the vehicles like these to patrol after natural disaster (prevent looters) They are also very old and require lots of constant maintenance.

  2. Unlike the united states, Canada doesn’t brag about their high risk take downs. Frankly, it isn’t anyone’s business. They happen, and the public only hears about when they go wrong.
The reason why policing isn’t in the Top 15 dangerous job, is because of technology like the very vehicle we’re talking about. Police are well trained in dealing with violent people. But again, when it goes well, nobody cares to hear about it…
I call you retards, not as a quick insult, but because jumping to the conclusion that Windsor Police is declaring war on “the people” is.. Well, retarded. They got a free vehicle to protect themselves and others, that’s all. No big deal.

  3. Ron, how many high risk operations have you heard of that have occurred in Canada?

Police officers do not even rank in the top 15 dangerous careers - so why the hell do they
need armoured fighting vehicles? A SWAT van is one thing - a military vehicle is another.

To call others retarded over a difference in opinion is proof that your argument subsists on
weak premises. Instead of resorting to ad hominems, try doing a bit of research.

  4. You people are retarded… I don’t even know how to argue you… It’s a free armoured vehicle, they took the giant cannon off of it. It’s used against criminals with high powered weapons….
    Declare war??? Seriously?
People are dangerous (Franky, how many got stabbed in your building? Now imagine that guy had a gun…) It’s sad when the police need a vehicle like this for their own protection… Paul and Darlene - Get a Life..

There is only one thing this kind of a vehicle is used for … WAR so i guess we know who they plan on using it against .. us , It seems they have forgot who pays their wages . I will remind them what goes around comes around and We see you .

This is a tool of war. So if the police have them then what they are saying is that they are at war with the people. No other way to slice it.
