FTC Gives Warning that Smart Appliances Pose Privacy Risks
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is a US government front. Their mission is “to prevent business practices that are anticompetitive or deceptive or unfair to consumers; to enhance informed consumer choice and public understanding of the competitive process; and to accomplish it without unduly burdening legitimate business activity.”
The FTC was at the RSA Conference in San Francisco’s Moscone Center on Feb 28th. RSA Conference 2014 brought together the top information security professionals and business leaders to discuss emerging cybersecurity trends and formulate best strategies for tackling current and future threats.
“A growing number of actions taken by the Federal Trade Commission underscore the agency’s aim to convince more electronics companies to consider the security of the devices they are selling to consumers. Internet-connected cameras, mobile phones, health monitoring devices and smart appliances all pose privacy risks for consumers because their manufacturers are not taking security precautions, Laura Berger, an attorney with the FTC, told attendees during a session on the security of smart devices.

The FTC is aiming more at civilian hackers abusing peoples privacy. This can be looked at like as a front to distract people from the real threat, which is governments being able to access all privacy information of consumers who use smart appliances.
With Snowden whistleblowing on the NSA and CSEC having to also admit to spying on citizens it’s not hard to imagine how easy it would be for those agencies (and the like) to be able to access private information from smart appliances. CSEC used an airport’s wifi to steal data from peoples computers and cell phones. All new electronics now a days are internet connected such cameras, phones, health monitoring devices and other smart technologies. They can access all the data on those devices as it is shown when CSEC hacked everybody’s device through wifi.
Take a look at the what Egyptian government did to it’s citizens during civil unrest, they were able to shut down the cameras on phones and even shut down the internet. They were able to shut down the cameras on phones because they have wifi capabilities.
The CIA admitted they will be utilizing smart appliances to spy on populations and so many countless examples of governments and government agencies abusing smart technologies.
In this day and age there is no privacy.
privacy
1.the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people.
We are constantly under surveillance, whether if it’s by the companies people purchase their smart appliances from to banks tracking digital transaction, there is very little privacy left, and this is only the beginning of what is being perpetuated.
