Don’t Talk To Police If You Are a Suspect in a Crime- EVEN IF YOU’RE INNOCENT
Have you ever heard the term: “you have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law”? Well they don’t say that for no reason and most people don’t take that advice. The police are not here to be your friend. They are on the job doing their job and their job is to charge you if you are a suspect in a crime and convict you. Most people will say to themselves, “well I’m innocent, I got nothing to hide, yes I will talk to you officer.” That can be a big mistake in some cases and sometimes innocent people can get convicted and charged of crimes they did not commit.
For example , in the summer time I went into my girlfriend’s aunt’s house to retrieve my bike while no one was home. Earlier that same day someone else had gone in there and stole my girlfriend’s aunt’s laptop so her aunt suspected it was me and called the cops on me. The police came to my house, arrested me and brought me down to the station. While I was in the station they put me in a holding cell where they said I can call duty counsel (a lawyer). The lawyer told me to not say a word to the officers. Unfortunately I did not take his legal advice.
The police man afterwards brought me into the interview room and asked me what happened. I figured since I’m innocent I have nothing to worry about so I told the officers all I did was go in the house to retrieve my bike and I never took a laptop. After I told them repetitively that I didn’t take the laptop they brought me back to the holding cell. After waiting in the holding cell for an hour or two they took me out of the cell and told me they had enough evidence to charge me with ‘break and enter’ and ‘theft under $5000′ and I was free to go on a promise to appear for court. So even though I was 100% innocent just because I admitted to going into the house that gave them enough evidence to charge me, and I was looking at jail time. Later on in the week the aunt found out who really did it and dropped the charges. If I never would’ve said a word they eventually would’ve had to release me without charges.
So there you have it, you must remain silent at all times because the police don’t care if you’re innocent. If they can obtain enough evidence against you they will charge you!
Below is a video presentation from an American law school professor and former criminal defense attorney who explains why you should never agree to be interviewed by the police, even if you’re innocent:

I don’t know, all I know is if you are a suspect in a crime and you are innocent… Don’t say anything. The police can hold you in the station for 24 hours and afterwards have to let you go. So stay the full 24 hours and don’t talk at all
Does this apply in canada ??
Thanks
