Courageous Officer Takes Down Man with a Sword at King & Holton- Hamilton

On November 5th 2013, one of the members of C.A.N, Warrand Francis, synchronicitically ran into an altercation at the Big Bear Convenience Store at 838 King St. E Hamilton located on the corner of King St. E and Holton Ave S. While he was inside purchasing something at around 10:00 pm he told me that a woman came in that seemed distressed and told him that there was a man outside with a sword. Warrand made his way outside and conversed with the man who appeared to be holding a huge sharp metal sword.

Warrand asked the man “what are you doing with that” (referring to the sword). Warrand told me the man then started to wave the sword around as if it was his way of telling Warrand to back off. Instead of backing off Warrand wrapped his shirt around his arms for protection in case the man tried to come at him, in my opinion this was a courageous thing to do but it was definitely not the smartest. Before anything escalated to a point where anyone can get hurt an extremely brave courageous officer came out of no where and tackled the man with the sword to the ground. Warrand told me the sword went flying out of the guys hands and the officer successfully apprehended him without anyone getting killed or hurt. The officer did all of this without peppery spray, taser or firearm. The officers asked Warrand if he wanted to lay charges and he denied the offer.

For full interview with Warrand giving me his first hand eye witness report please click below:

It baffles my mind that Andreas Chinnery and Steve Mesic were both killed by multiple gunshot wounds and they were holding way less lethal weapons (Chinnery-baseball bat and Mesic-small rectangular shovel). Who ever this officer is, is a prime example of what an officer should be. He has a conscious , is brave and courageous. I was surprised to see no story of this published in the Hamilton Spectator. Perhaps in my opinion, maybe they never published it cause it would have Const. Kevin Farrell, Const. Spencer McNaughton and the other officers that used deadly lethal force look bad because it’s obvious that less lethal force tactics should’ve been used in their situations. Who ever this officer is, is a true hero. I hope more police officers are doing things like this. If Warrand was never there this story would’ve never got out.

MESSAGE TO OFFICER:

If you are the officer spoken about in this article, please feel free to contact us and give us your name. You are a hero.

  1. As far as this site is concerned, any time a police officer shoots somebody they are in the wrong! This site just annoys me now. It’s clear that your opinion nor mine will ever change. I’m sure I’ll see you at the inquest….;)

    @Loyd and Ron

Hey Loyd, I totally agree with you. The media doesn’t release any positive stories about police officers, that is why we make an effort to release positive stories about police. The powers that be, strive to keep a division between citizens and police officers, because it is the police officers that are enforcing policies set forth by the negative aspects of elitists. Why do you think there is an abundant amount of songs and video games abundant full of messages to children that paraphrase F*** the police? The same people that control the media (news, songs, videos games etc) at the national level are the same people that make the policies for the ‘police’ to enforce Why do you think there is only negative stories published by police… it is to brew up hatred in the masses towards police. And I’m sure you know police working long hours and many days stresses them out keeping them in ‘fright or flight’ mode of consciousness, easily reacts wrong to situations. I feel like the stress on police officer and the public brainwashed to hate police is a good mixed to keep division

THINK ABOUT! WHY THE FUCK IS THE MEDIA NOT PUBLISHING GOOD STORIES ABOUT YOU? I was downtown chillin with an officer last year who told me he saved a kid from drowning out of lake ontario and was very upset at the fact that that story never got out. That’s because the elitists don’t want police to feel gratitude when they do something good. They want police to feel gratitude when they shoot a man, by showing police you will get paid vacations and the SIU will clear you of charges. I say you, cause obviously you’re a cop, don’t deny it. I don’t have a problem with that.

Yes we’ve released negative stories, because those stories are a big deal to us and when it comes down to talking with the victims familys and getting both sides of the story, we are able to see discrepancies and cover ups released in the SIU reports. A wise man says there are two sides to every story and if you only know one side of the story you don’t know the whole thing. I’m sure Mcnaughton and all those other cops have been heroes on the job, and i feel sorry for those stories never getting out. But Lyod just because they did good things doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be punished for the bad things they’ve done.

I’ve been charged for my wrong doings, Terry’s been charged for his wrong doings, so why are not these officers charged of their wrong doings? Just cause the SIU clears them doesn’t mean they didn’t do anything wrong, that’s a logical fallacy- appeal to authority … look it up.

So what’s your beef with us now? Do you have a problem with us doing positive stories about police? Do you think that I am unaware that these things happen all the time? Didn’t you listen to the interview? I’m the one who’s been telling everyone that there are good cops out there, I’m the one who’s been telling everyone that not all cops are the same, I’ve been the one telling everyone that we need to praise the cops for the good actions so they can feel gratitude and this article is an expression of my praise. You obviously haven’t listened to all our videos and you haven’t deciphered the message we’re sending. Majority of our listeners get it, the others like you unfortunately don’t. We’ll do our best to make sure our msgs are clear.

  3. Here’s the argument about Transparency…
The police arrive to a situation, with the hopes to leave it in a better situation than it was when they arrived. They understand - more than anyone - that people have “bad days” or slip ups with mental health issues. If the police comment or release every call they do, then there is a good chance media groups, such as this, will plaster the name and condition of the person involved all over the internet - ruining their reputation.
The police not just serve, but they protect. They protect the reputation of those they serve.
This is why they won’t release the names of those charged with a “domestic” related offence. It protects the victim’s privacy. Because if you know who is charged, it’s pretty easy to know who the victim is.
Multiple times a day, police talk people off bridges, the edge of the escarpment, talk knives out of peoples hands and hell, even tackle a guy with a sword. But they don’t brag, they don’t release details and publish it, because that person they just helped deserve the privacy that they get.
Transparency is a wonderful idea in the eyes of the media that needs to sell a story. But they majority of the time, privacy is in direct contravention of the “right” to good reputation.
Farrell, Toucher, McNaughton all went to work with the intent to help people. They were all put into a situation, that they felt if the didn’t take a life, they would lose theirs - or be badly hurt - if they didn’t. They have all saved lives as well. Again, they don’t brag about it, and they never will. Because even though sites like this drag them through the mud and dirt, they still have the common decency to keep private matters private.
Transparency works for police in terms of budget and administration concerns, but as for the day to day calls for service, respect the privacy of those people of Hamilton. Including the individual police officers that are hired to protect them.

I wouldn’t doubt that they have Loyd. If you couldn’t tell we try to do as many good stories about police that we can. Contrary to what you or other might believe. we are not anti police. We simply want transparency and justice.

We have also contacted HPS (and spoken to individual officers) asking to do stories with them on positive police stories. Our requests where left unanswered and the officers directed us to media relations (they are the ones we didn’t get an answer from in the first place). Media doesn’t release the stories? So far in my experience, HPS is not open about them!

  5. You guys are fuckin idiots! This stuff happens everyday. The media doesn’t release a fraction of the good work police officers do. You guys are so ignorant it makes my blood boil. You think officers tocher, Farrell, mcnaughton, etc haven’t done things like this. This website is a joke!
