GMO Foods. Bill C 257 Is a Small Win

GMOs (genetically modified organisms) fruits and vegetables are the result of a laboratory process of taking genes from one species and inserting them into another species, splicing and mixing DNA.

Over 70% of the foods on the Canadian shelves contain GMO foods. The main ones are corn soy, oil from canola and cottonseed, sugar from sugar beets, and a small amount of zucchini and crook neck squash. Livestock feeds are GMO too so it’s having an effect on the animals we eat.

The reason why Monsanto and other genetically modifying companies claim their reasons are to make the GMO crops is to genetically modify them to be pest and insect resistant and to live in condtions that plants normally wouldn’t and couldn’t live in, such as the ‘aluminum resisting’ patent Monsanto developed or being able to survive in toxic pesticide (and herbicde) enviornments. They inject the plant’s genome with pesiticdes and other DNA’s from different species of plants, insects and animals.

These crops are in no way good for our health and simple research on the internet would provide you with abundant amount of evidence such as the experiment that involved 200 rats fed with GMO corns producing disguistingly large tumors.

“Canadians have a right to make informed choices about the food they eat by having adequate information provided on food labels.”
~ Jean Crowder- NDP MP for Nanaimo

A new bill (Bill C-257) has been introduced by the NDP-Alex Atamanenko, MP for BC’s Southern Interior and the Agriculture Critic to make mandatory labeling for GMO foods.

Genetically modifying (GM) has gotten completely out of control! There are companies that GM stingrays to make personalized shoes out of, in Korea they cloned GM cats that glow in the dark and there is even GM salmon for eating consumption. All of this covered in one our earlier article “Genetic Modification Gone Wild

In all I agree we need to label GMO foods because it is vital for us to maintain optimal health but it is a small win. We have to BAN GMO’s all together! We should not just settle for ‘labelling’ them.
